Green Country Guest Speakers

by Bill Kokendoffer, President

Our Green Country Division was honored to have guest speakers at our March and April meetings. In March Ray Maczik from The Standing Company was our guest speaker and in April Sharon Braun and Armondo Duke Community Advocates from Horizon Hospice spoke with our members.

The Standing Company produces a line of wheelchairs that have the capability to stand the user up in a standing position. I was fortunate to be able to try one of the chairs Ray brought to demonstrate. This chair raised me to a standing position with ease and I was able to look face to face with others who were standing. Looking at others face to face was only a small benefit of the chair, standing I was able to stretch my heel cords and hamstrings like I haven’t been able to in years. After using the chair just a short time my back felt better than it has in a long time. I can truly see the benefit in using the standing chairs. I want to Thank Ray and the Standing Company for demonstrating these chairs and wish them well in their business.

Our April speakers Sharon Braun and Armondo Duke spoke on a more somber but very important subject, hospice. When most people hear the word hospice they associate it with "death" or "dying". For the most part hospice is for those who have reached the final stages of life but it goes much further than that. A good hospice will offer counseling, leading the patient and family through their darkest days. They will offer support in many ways, from final preparations such as estate planning to funeral arrangements. A caring nursing staff teamed together with clergy, social workers and volunteers all play a pivotal role in preparing the patient and family for this their final journey. The hospice will offer comfort and support long after the passing of the loved one.

I would like to "Thank" Ray Maczik, Armondo Duke and Sharon Braun for sharing their time and information with our group. If you would like more information about either of these subjects, please contact the office for phone numbers.
