2008 Ten Pin Meltdown – MAPVA Tournament Richard Harrell, TD
Heritage Lanes, Oklahoma City, OK August 14-17,2008
The Mid-America PVA chapter rolled out the red carpet to host their first
bowling tournament with a ton of enthusiasm and southern hospitality. Considering that it was just three weeks after
the Southern Open and just prior to the MSCPV event, attendance was not quite what they hoped. Nonetheless, they
were successful in giving the attendees a top notch event and I expect a larger turnout next year… perhaps in a
different time frame.
Thursday began with two qualifying squads of three games each. Friday contested the Doubles Event
won by Tim Eldridge and Shawn Tracy besting Robert Lesage and tournament director, Rich Harrell. Friday night we had
a 9 pin no-tap which was won by J.K. Johnston and his partner Robert Horne.
Saturday the bowlers returned to bowl two more qualifying rounds. We bowled the final round on
Sunday morning with the top qualifiers being, Loretta Moon in "B", Paul Cook "A" and Bob Goddard in "Scr". The roll
off results by division:
Scratch A Division B Division
Match 1 Uttecht d Johnston (209 (60-37) Ryan d Daniel (210-208) Smith d Eldridge (225-215)
Match 2 Uttecht d Shepherd (194-148) Willis d Ryan (228-199) Smith d Lesage (207-200)
Match 3 Goddard d Uttecht (210-184) Willis d Webber (216-195) Beckley d Smith
(210-198)
Match 4 Willis d Cook (243-224) Beckley d Moon (211-201)
Immediately after the roll off we were treated to a fine meal at the bowling center, with Steak
and all the fixin’s. The awards were presented to the champions as acknowledged above. Individual awards were given
to Bob Goddard HSS (584), Mark Shepherd HSG (209) in scratch, Bob Willis HHS (666), Paul Cook HHG (256), Wayne
Webber HSS (491) and Phillip Daniel HSG (191) in "A". In the "B" Tom Richey HHS (720), Doug Beckley HHG (243), Rich
Harrell HSS (408) and Shawn Tracy HSG (132). Of note, Tom Richey pre-bowled Sunday’s games on Saturday as he had to
catch a 6 AM flight to go to the PVA convention, understanding that his best finish would be sixth as he could not
be present for the roll off, which as it turned out cost him the high qualifier.
We gratefully acknowledge the PVA National contribution each year as well as the staff of
Heritage Lanes who went above and beyond to provide an excellent event. I want to thank Dave Roberts for his
assistance in scoring the tournament and especially the staff and members of our Mid-America Chapter for their
efforts to bring this event to our area and for doing us proud.
